Design excellence for medium density development

Brief

The Missing Middle competition was conceived to promote, test and improve the NSW Department of Planning and Environment’s (now DPIE) Medium Density Design Guide. An initiative of the NSW Government Architect’s office (GANSW), it invited architects and building designers to showcase their visions for the future of housing in NSW by seeking high-quality, innovative design solutions for low-rise medium density housing in three ‘missing middle’ categories: terraces, dual occupancies and manor homes.

Approach

Left Bank Co. was appointed by GANSW as Competition Registrar and Advisor for the Missing Middle Competition, helping develop and structure the Competition, overseeing the competition process, and ensuring it was conducted fairly, equitably and with integrity. Our role was also to maintain probity and ensure the anonymity of entries throughout the Competition, handling and managing the entries, the evaluation and Jury process, and coordinating with the Government Architect Office on the preparation, delivery and results of the Competition.

Impact

The winning entries were evaluated on their compliance with and innovation in using the draft guides. The winning entrants were announced in April 2017.
