Planning for placemaking opportunities
Brief
With the 2015 announcement by the NSW Government that a metro service is being planned between Chatswood and Bankstown, significant strategic plans, studies and precinct planning has been undertaken by the Department of Planning and Environment in preparation for this once-in-a-generation opportunity. The Government Architect NSW was tasked with studying the local character and placemaking opportunities at each station, and commissioned different architects and urban planners to undertake the work.
Approach
Left Bank Co., in partnership with Aileen Sage Architects, were asked by the Government Architect NSW to contribute to these studies - in particular - conducting a fine grain public domain and station integration study for Bankstown Station – a major transport hub in Sydney’s southwest. The objective of this scope of works was to understand the urban placemaking opportunities offered as a result of the changes in rail services that will come from the upgrade to a metro service.
Impact
The Bankstown Station study formed part of a wider design-led review of the draft masterplans and became a valuable input alongside community extensive consultation to refine station masterplans across the whole Sydenham to Bankstown line.
