Planning a Public Art and Heritage Interpretation Strategy

Client: City of Parramatta

Location: Parramatta, NSW

Year: 2020

A creative legacy for the streets of Parramatta

Brief

Parramatta is a rapidly growing urban centre, tracking well towards becoming Sydney’s Central City as per the Greater Sydney Commission Three City Plan. With the investment happening in the CBD, Council is keen to see a coordinated strategy to leverage planning provisions and development contributions to create a new public art and heritage interpretation legacy that will build Parramatta’s reputation as an arts and culture destination.

Approach

Left Bank Co. were engaged by Council to work with external and internal stakeholders to flesh out the essential elements of a proposed Public Art and Heritage Interpretation Strategy. Using our knowledge of complex urban systems and cultural infrastructure, we conducted a series of face-to-face and online workshops to gather and analyse stakeholder inputs and determine how they could best inform the Strategy.

Impact

The outcomes of this engagement go beyond shaping the Strategy: they have been important forums for sharing information and insights across Council, helping colleagues understand the impact that decision making has on bigger urban systems, processes and outcomes.
