Brief

Following many years working at the coalface of creative space planning and championing alternative development models from overseas, Left Bank Co. realised the need to bring together the property sector and the cultural sector to truly tackle the creative space challenge. For three years running, Left Bank Co. has designed and delivered a professional development incubation program at no cost to participants, thanks to the City of Sydney’s ideas and innovation sponsorship program. The program brings these two sectors together to learn from international models and from one another, with the objective to build networks, share knowledge and better position both sectors to play a role in delivering future solutions to providing creative space.

Approach

The Making Space for Culture Incubation Program sees a diverse group of property developers and creative and cultural organisations, representing many of the country’s leaders in their respective fields. Over six months, a series of group workshops, networking events, one-on-one mentoring sessions, and homework tasks give the participants the knowledge, tools, and relationships to implement new and strategic approaches to delivering affordable and long-term creative spaces.

Impact

By championing this cause within a powerful and strategic cohort, Left Bank Co. supports cultural organisations to demonstrate their value and helps property developers to see the long-term benefits of delivering affordability and long-term security of tenure.

Importantly, the program also provides the City of Sydney with insight into how they can continue to facilitate and support both sectors on this journey. It also helps us to identify how and where we can better work with both sectors to continue to champion space for creativity and culture in our cities.
