An adventure to the bottom of the ocean

Brief

The Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) is the country’s national museum dedicated to the collection, exhibition and research of our maritime story. Located in Sydney’s Darling Harbour, the ANMM holds one of the largest floating fleets in the world and explores the country’s maritime history from the earliest Indigenous peoples through to modern warfare and leisure. With a large site and a prime location, the ANMM leadership team has been considering its options to maximise the utilisation of the site to best serve its audience and its purpose.

Approach

The ANMM approached Left Bank Co. to explore concepts and ideas to utilise spaces within the existing footprint of the museum, while concurrently redefining and evolving the museum experience. Left Bank Co. worked closely with the senior leadership team to investigate, assess and resolve a strategic vision and set of objectives for a new attraction within the museum, including its spatial and design qualities, curatorial approach and experiential considerations. This was articulated in a strategic concept document, illustrated with benchmarks and imagery to bring the vision to life.

Impact

The concept document produced to articulate the Discovery Centre is a strategic tool being used to lead the ANMM on a process of securing funding and resolving the design in order to make the Discovery Centre a reality over time.
